Curriculum Statement 2026/2027 – Striving for Excellence

A successful English student in our learning community is one who aspires
to be the best person they can be. They will be an avid reader, and a
critical thinker. They will develop a passion for life-long learning, and
build the resilience to achieve academic and personal excellence.

Intention

Our intention is for students to have the very best experience of
exploring Literature and Language; we want them to love the subject as
much as we do:

● to read for pleasure, purpose, and power to open their minds to
different possibilities and to arm themselves with rigorously
interrogated information to arm themselves for life in an
increasingly divided world
● to become analytical and creative thinkers – not just to ask
questions, but to offer their own perspectives and arguments
● to use their voice purposefully and articulately with empathy and
tolerance
● to communicate using the written word in a thoughtful and
cohesive manner thinking carefully about audience and purpose

Schemes of learning are annually reviewed within the framework of
ʻabandon, adapt, adoptʼ to ensure our curriculum is fit for this purpose.
At the same time stretch and challenge is embedded within the schemes
to allow all students to be pushed – and push themselves – towards
their potential: we want students to aspire to be the best they can be
regardless of their starting points.
